Description
Mid-20th century, with maker's brand to underside, ''Johannes Hansen / Copenhagen / Denmark'', teak, the downswept ''hanger'' crest above a vasiform splat over a hinged saddle seat and tripod base, 37.5'' H x 20'' W x 21'' D, est:$4000/6000. Note: The design of this chair was an effort to solve the problem of how to properly hold every article of a gentleman's clothing set at the end of the day to preserve their form without wrinkles. Wegner initially conceived of this chair with four legs but was unsatisfied with the heavy-looking form. The final model is sculptural as well as utilitarian. This model is illustrated in the following: J. Bernsen. ''Hans J. Wegner'', Copenhagen, 1995, pp. 37, 67, and 104. N. Oda. ''Danish Chairs'', San Francisco, 1996, p. 116. C. & P. Fiell. ''1000 Chairs'', Cologne, 2000, p. 300. C. & P. Fiell. ''Scandinavian Design'', Cologne, 2002, p. 655. This model chair sold Sollo Rago Modern Auction, Lambertville, NJ, 27 October 2007, lot 117 ($13,000). Provenance: Property from an Important Private Collection, Palos Verdes, CA
