C. Churchill (1732-1764) gained immediate fame in 1761 after publishing The Rosciad (a mock succession) at his own expense. After befriending John Wilkes sometimes around 1762, his work became more pointedly political as is evident in the third book of The Ghost. Churchill produced 14,000 lines of published verse in three and half years, making a virtue of his roughness and speed of composition. His satires engage in passing controversies, but center on himself as both digressive and self-reflexive. Oxford DNB. Rothschild 621. ESTC 98756 and 98902.
