Otto Piene (German, 1928-2014), "Eclipse", 1970. Signed, numbered, and dated in pencil on lower left. A colored serigraph by Otto Piene, an influential German artist of the postwar era who studied at the Academy of Art in Munich as well as the Dusseldorf Academy. From the very start, Piene was an innovator in the art world, exploring correlations between technology, nature, and art. In 1958, he founded the ZERO group with his friend Heinz Mack, and three years later they were joined by Günther Uecker. This trio is regarded as among the most internationally influential artists of their time. Piene came to the US in 1964 when he was granted an honorary professorship at the University of Pennsylvania. He later taught at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge where he explored multi-media art using the technology of computers and lasers.
