CLIFTON KARHU (1927-2007) came to Japan in 1955 and worked continuously as an artist until his death in Kyoto in 2007. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Karhu graduated from the Minneapolis School of Art in 1952. From 1955, when he arrived in Japan, he was active as a painter in oil, watercolor and sumi before taking up woodblock prints in the early 1960's. A member of the Nihon Hanga Kyokai since 1964, Karhu has had many solo shows throughout Japan. His prints often depict typical Japanese buildings, temples, rooftops and shops using bold lines, patterns and strong colors. Clifton Karhu works were commissioned by major firms in Japan and Hong Kong and are represented in collections, including Cincinnati; Harvard University; St. Paul, Minnesota and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
