Description
Oceania/Polynesia, New Zealand, Maori people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A huge oyster shell pectoral, presented to Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968) on his trip to New Zealand. The shell has a rich, buttery appearance, with pearlescent and iridescent tones; it is nearly translucent in its thinner areas, and shines when light is behind it. It has an openwork motif featuring a swordfish surrounded by wave-like swirls and curls; these are mirrored in the shape of the fish's tail. The back of the piece is smooth and gently curved. A thin, woven strap with a shell toggle makes the piece wearable. Size: 6.9" W x 5.1" H (17.5 cm x 13 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Duke Kahanamoku was a Native Hawaiian who is known as "The Big Kahuna." He popularized the sport of surfing, as well as being a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. In 1915, he visited New Brighton, near Christchurch, New Zealand, and taught the locals how to surf - an act that was honored in 2015 by the dedication of a statue of him on the beach.
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; from Duke Kahanamoku's niece, who had the piece via descent
