Four Hand Colored Woodcuts, One Black Ink Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:
Recto: woodcut of Henry VII (1275-1313) of the House of Luxembourg. Description of his coronation as the King of Germany (or Rex Romanorum) in 1308 and Holy Roman Emperor in 1312; His campaign in Italy, struggles between the Guelf and Ghibelline factions, the praise of Dante Alighieri.
Verso: hand colored woodcut of Tampliers Order monastery, with a story of Order extinction; lightly toned, hand colored woodcuts of Trusianus a physician of Florence, Richard de Media Villa, and a 1314 comet appearance coinciding with the death of Philip of France after 29 years reign.
Note the handwriting in the margins, 16.25 x 11.25 in. Beautifully preserved.
The Liber Chronicarum by Hartmann Schedel printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger in 1493, or Nuremberg Chronicle as it is generally called, is one of the most important German incunables and the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century. The text is a universal history of the Christian world from the beginning of times to the early 1490s.
