Description
A large important old master Late 16th - Early 17th Century Spanish School Oil Painting Depicting Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata | The painting resembles important Spanish gothic religious paintings from that period | Painted on a large scale, presumably as a devotional painting within a prominent chapel, by a major hand of the period. A rare and early example of the perio | The type of canvas used is dated to as early as the late 16th Century. The Painting's canvas is an early hand woven open weave of hemp. The weave is a very unique twill weave usually associated with the 17th Century Spanish School. This early canvas weave has a dramatically lower thread count, is more wavy than later linear weaves, and varies in thickness and texture. Overall the weave is lacking the density, tightness and symmetry of later linen canvases. The canvas was later mounted to a wood panel support with what appears to be a wax substance with additional ingredients. The solid wood panel appears to have been hand carved or hewn, likely dating the newer support to the 18th Century or earlier. Please see photos for condition details. The painting's current frame is of a much more recent design and composition, likely 19th Century. The painting measures 33 1/4" x 25 1/2" Frame measures 32 3/4" W x 41 1/4" H (Heavy Frame, Large Painting). Dimensions: 32 3/4" W x 41 1/4" H Medium: Oil on Canvas and mounted on wood panel Date: 17th Century Condition Report: Painting has mild pigment fading in some areas and darkened varnish in lower left of canvas, all of which is as could be expected. Has some stretcher bar impressions and accretion buildup in perimeter areas not interfering with figures. Is housed in a Provenance: From a prominent Italian Estate. Notes: Additional High Resolution Photographs will be added soon.
