A FAMILLE ROSE MOLDED PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE
Molded and carved porcelain in high relief, painted in vivid Famille Rose enamels. China, 1800-1850
The body is molded in high relief with a continuous scene of figures in boats, three figures in a sampan on one side and two standing in a skiff on the reverse, the two scenes separated by willow trees growing from rocks, and all against a ground of wind-tossed waves below multi-colored clouds and a band of key fret on the neck.
Shape: Bulbous form
Hollowing: Standard
Mouth, neck and lip: Cylindric neck, wide mouth
Base: Flat oval base
Design, marks, school: Imperial, Jingdezehn kilns
Stopper: Stained organic material with coral color on a green platelet
Height of the bottle with stopper: 5.8 cm.
Width of the mouth: 7 mm.
Width of the neck: 13 mm.
Condition: Neck and foot trimmed, extensive wear, one chip and minor nibbling, overall fair condition
Provenance: Old Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930, thence by descent
