Description
Pre 1800, 144 x 111 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan

This rare Tekke ensi belongs to a small sub-group in which the tree forms of the red-ground main border enclose the whole of the field in a continuous surround which also provides the design of the upper of the two elems at the lower end. The lower elem is decorated with the same tree forms, but its ground colour is light brown. Indications of an early date are the small format; the fine and meticulous weave; the sophistication of the drawing; the velvety pile wool and the patinated colours, including a light green. – Signs of age and wear, the upper right-hand corner has been repiled; both ends slightly reduced, damaged sides, minor holes and moth damage, several old repairs.
