Europe, Italy, Engraved by Georg Abraham Hackert (1755-1805) after Jacob Philipp Hackert (German, 1737-1807), "Avanzi del Tempio di Giove Serapide a Pozzuoli" etching, ca. second half of 18th century CE. Jacob Philipp Hackert was a landscape painter from Brandenburg (now Germany) who practiced his art in Italy, basing himself in Rome and Naples, and creating many works for Sir William Hamilton. He travelled throughout Italy and earned a strong reputation as a talented landscape painter. His fame also grew, because he served as court painter to Ferdinand IV -king of both Naples and Sicily, also referred to as "The Two Sicilies", and created a cycle of paintings for Catherine the Great -about the Battle of Chesma- as well as paintings for Pope Pius VI. Handwritten in pencil on the verso is the title of a book by Attilio Zuccagni-Orlandini (1783-1872): "Corogafia, Storica, e Statistica dell' Italia e delle sue Isola" (1835) in which this image was published.

The Temple of Serapis was not actually temple but rather a former market lined with shops. Its name derives from an apse in the end wall that once held a statue of Serapis, the protecting God of traders. The remaining columns in the central pavilion depicted in this etching show signs of marine corrosion today, up to a height of 5 meters from the ground, suggesting there were times when they were submerged.
