Glazed ceramic with paint and gold. Japan, Meiji period
Extremely unusual, delicately crafted cricket cage. The form is ovoid and almost entirely openwork and perfectly imitates a woven basket. The “carrying handle” is a cloth that is wrapped around the basket and tied together at the top. It is decorated with blossoms, is colorful and features gold. The vaulted, openwork lid has a golden knob. On the bottom are three stubby legs and the signature FU-ZAN 冨 山.
Condition: Very well preserved, minor chipping to lid
Provenance: From an important Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930
