Description
Glazed ceramic with paint and gold. Japan, Meiji period
All splendidly dressed and with considerable gold, many full bearded and rather like wisemen in appearance, though also armed, some with bow and arrow. Trees, mountainous landscape, waterfall and, on the other side of the stream, another smaller group of people. Ostentatiously executed borders, in particular that on the shoulder, the patterning varied and extremely meticulous. On the bottom are the inscriptions, in gold against a black background: HO-DO-DA 保 土 田 zo 造, on the right; SATSU-MA-YAKI 薩 摩 焼 (Satsuma ceramic) in the middle below the satsuma mon of the Shimazu family; and the painter's name SUI-GETSU 翠 月kore ga 之 画 (painted it), on the outer left.
