Item Details
Description
Andy Warhol (American, 1930-1987), "Bighorn Ram", 1987, editor Art Basel 1987. A screenprint in colors from Andy Warhol's "Endangered Species" portfolio, from a limited edition of 1000, a promotional print for the 1987 Art Basel fair, created during the last year of Warhol's life. This one depicts a bighorn ram (a male bighorn sheep) and is one of the six color variations of this print. Andy Warhol, the original King of Pop, created a series of color screenprints depicting and paying homage to endangered animals from all over the globe. In addition to the bighorn ram featured here, Warhol paid homage to the orangutan, the Siberian tiger, the African elephant, the black rhinoceros, the bald eagle, the giant panda, the pine barrens tree frog, Grevy's zebra, and the San Francisco silverspot butterfly. In his signature style, Warhol used a vibrant color palette and superimposed stylized details over realistic portrayals of these noble animals, using his art to point to a dire reality for these species. Size: 7.9" L x 7.9" W (20 cm x 20 cm); 15.75" L x 15.75" W (40 cm x 40 cm) in mat

Andy Warhol's life and art was infatuated with consumer culture, celebrity, and mechanical reproduction. In addition to his art, Warhol was also famous for his clever quotes — "art is what you can get away with" and "everyone will be famous for 15 minutes". Warhol is probably best known for his imagery inspired by popular culture and everyday subject matter, creating masterful silk-screen prints such as his 32 Campbell's Soup Cans (1962), Brillo pad box sculptures, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, in characteristic hard edges and a candy-like color palette. Indeed, Andy Warhol created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century.
