After the Monroe Doctrine, the United States government encouraged American artists to explore the various regions of South America. George Catlin was among them and he, unlike many of his counterparts, wrote extensively about his adventures in both his Life amongst the Indians and Last Rambles amongst the Indians of the Rocky Mountains and the Andes.
