Description
1863 Spanish Inquisition Mysteries Fereal Cuendias Garduna
Victorine Germillan, also known as Victor de Fereal, was a 19th-century French Romantic poetess who was known primarily for her poem ‘Les Mysteres de l’Inquisition.’ This novella became much more of a popular romance rather than a historical novel, even though most of the notes by Manuel de Cuendias point out flaws in Spanish politics. It also focuses on secret societies in Spain during the 15th-century, particularly the ‘Garduna,’ the criminal society.
Cuendias and Germillan began a love affair during their correspondence on this work, and many believe that the romance portrayed in this book was an outline of their own relationship. The two fought to denounce the Spanish Inquisition as corrupt and fanatical and used actual characters and situations from the Inquisition for the basis of their writing.
This 1863 edition features notes and commentary by Manuel de Cuendias and is beautifully illustrated with in-text figures throughout.
