Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze phalera, a sculpted button awarded to and worn by Roman soldiers on their breastplates. This example is boss- or shield-shaped. It is inscribed very legibly with "VITA LUCIUS SABINUS," vita meaning life, while the rest is a personal name. Small lion heads are incised between the words, probably indicating a connection to the military. Size: 2.45" W (6.2 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
