Description
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze figure of a bearded man, seated and naked apart from a pointed cap on his head, with rope binding the hands and extending around the neck and down to the ankles; hole through the body and another vertically through the neck to the rump, for attachment. See Fischer, C. Tollundmanden: gaven til guderne: mosefund fra Danmarks forhistorie, Silkeborg, 2007. 31 grams, 52mm (2"). Ex Stratford collection, Suffolk, UK; acquired on the UK art market after 2000. The figure of a man bound with rope and wearing a cap recalls the famous body recovered from the marsh at Tollund, Denmark. It is understood that the 'Tollund Man' was a sacrificial victim, possibly a prisoner-of-war or perhaps a nobleman.
