Description
9th-11th century AD. A ferrous bearded axehead with slightly curved edge, narrow shank, square chin with small spur to the rear edge, socket with lateral wings and lozengiform plaque to the reverse. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, table 14. 883 grams, 19.5cm (7 3/4"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent.
