Item Details
Description
Made by the J. & E. Stevens Company Cromwell, Ct. - Circa 1878 Following the close of the Civil War, many soldiers returned home maimed or blind. Children witnessed haunting images of injured soldiers in their daily life. They were taught the significance of showing kindness and giving alms to these brave war heroes. It is in this sociocultural atmosphere that a toy bank such as the Patronize Bank could catch the imagination of all those who played with it. To operate the bank, you must put a penny in the spring-loaded hands of the blind man. Carefully pulling the lever leftwards causes the dog to walk towards his master. As he approaches, the dog’s mouth closes on the penny. When he moves past the blind man, the dog drops the coin into the brickwork tower. This is an extremely superior, all original example of the Patronize Bank. Provenance: Seaman’s Savings Bank
