Description
Wedgwood Black Basalt Vestal Oil Lamp, England. Wedgwood, Burslem (Stoke-on-Trent), Staffordshire, England, 19th century. The neoclassical-style black basalt oil lamp and cover with seated woman with jug. In fine condition, repair to finial ball. Measures 9 1/8 x 8 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches. Weight 1 pd 7 oz/. PROVENANCE: A Private Williamsburg, VA Estate. Josiah Wedgwood introduced into production a black stoneware body in 1768. The first trials for Wedgwood's new black body had begun by July 1766, even before the move to Etruria. By September 1767 his experiments were at an advanced stage, ready for production, and less than twelve months later black basalt wares were on the market.

In fine condition, repair to finial ball, two hairlines on base (see pictures)
