Description
1889 Alice in Wonderland &Through the Looking Glass Tenniel Illustrated Classic
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!”
― Lewis Carrol, Through the Looking-Glass
‘Through the Looking Glass’ was published a few years after the success of ‘Adventures in Wonderland’. While it was never as popular as ‘Adventures in Wonderland’ it did include ‘the greatest nonsense poem ever written in the English language’, the “Jabberwocky” (Gardner). It was in this poem that Carroll created playful nonsense words that have become recognizable in English such as “galumphing” and “chortle”
It’s not only Lewis Carroll’s words that captured readers’ imaginations; John Tenniel’s illustrations brought the story to life and remain in our collective consciousness to this day. Tenniel’s illustrations are often considered the best of the ‘Alice’ illustrations.
This late 19th century printing has both classic tales combined in one and thus contains over 100 of Tenniel’s illustrations.
