A really beautiful, unique real wood frame that adds such flavor and really accentuates this painting. Savain was a prolific Haitian artist and a writer. Savain was born in Port au Prince and studied at the Haitain School of Agronomy from which he received a degree in law. He began painting in his early years and by his early thirties he was also the author of one book, La Case de Damballa which was published in 1939. He also became a teacher, lawyer. In 1940 his painting titled, “Market” won a bronze medal at New York World Fair. He studied at the Art Students League in New York. In 1943 he was studying fresco technique with Jean Charlot, tempura painting with Stephane Hisch and wood sculpture with John Taylor Arms. Savain’s personal style has been copied by many Haitain artists, but his colors and hues are instantly recognizeable, as is his use of semicircles and triangles in which painted figures sit or crouch. His artistic work, known for their bright colors, have been displayed in numerous art galleries, such as the Corcoran Gallery and the Grand Central and Riverside Museums in New York. His works have also been exhibited in Washington DC, San Francisco, Florida, New York and Europe. His works are held in many private collections. This work is iconic Savain.
