He was 65 years old.Mr. Dole's works were mostly quite small, but they commanded attention from the outset by reason of the authority with which he put them together and the firm architectural structure that he could give to scraps of printed matter that in themselves were merely fragmentary. He worked with words - written, printed or engraved - as much as with color and texture; and his raw materials were of every imaginable kind -early maps, 19th-century bills and ephemera, old handwritten letters, specimens of marbleized paper and papers imported from Japan for use in the manufacture of artificial roses. It was if there was nothing that he could not put to good use.Exhibitions of his work were held in London, Berlin, Rome and Mexico City, as well as in many cities in the United States. Since 1974 he had shown in New York at the Staempfli Gallery, where his current show runs through today.William Dole was born in Angola, Ind. He was the son of William Earl Dole and Edna Cowan Dole. While studying at Olivet College in Indiana, where he graduated in 1938, he had personal contact with Gertrude Stein, Ford Madox Ford, W.H. Auden and Sherwood Anderson. In 1941 he married Kathryn Lee Holcomb. During World War II he served in the United States Army Air Corps, from which he was discharged in 1945. Turned to Collage in 50's.From 1947 to 1949 he was a lecturer in the department of art history at the University of California in Berkeley, and in 1949 he began a long association with the University of California in Santa Barbara, where he served as chairman of the art history department and was made a full professor in 1962. It was during a sabbatical in Florence in the mid-1950's that he turned from painting what he called ''back-alley architecture and ashcan realism'' to the collage for which he became famous. In 1961 the late Joseph Hirshhorn bought the first of what was to become a large private collection of Mr. Dole's works. Seventeen of these are now in the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington. In 1976-77 a retrospective exhibition of Mr. Dole's collages done between 1960 and 1975 was shown in museums in Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, San Diego and Santa Barbara. In 1974 he was given a one-man show at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, and in 1978 he was made an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts at Olivet College in Indiana.
