Description
What Price Football / A Player's Defence of the Game Barry Wood [Harvard's Great All-American Quarterback] 1932, Houghton, Mfiflin Boston 1st edition William Barry Wood, Jr. (May 4, 1910 – March 9, 1971) was an American football player and medical educator. Wood played quarterback for Harvard during the 1929–1931 seasons and was one of the most prominent football players of his time. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980. An accomplished student as well as a gifted athlete, Wood went on to a highly successful academic career in medicine and microbiology at Washington University in St. Louis and Johns Hopkins University. What Price Football was written by the author to refute the anti football hysteria sweeping the 'intelligentsia' of the day, reaching all the way to congress and Teddy Roosevelt's White House, that the game is dangerous and of little benefit to the players. Wood, is well qualified to express his opinions on the game, having played for three years on the Harvard Varsity and named All American quarterback in 1932. treats the subject from the player's point of view. It does not consist of a player's random reminiscences nor is it a technical study of formations but Wood's conception of the game from a historical, competitive, physical/ medical viewpoint.
