Description
Obsolete CurrencyClassic New Jersey Whaling Scene Type

Perth Amboy, NJ, The Commercial Bank of New Jersey, $5, "Whaling Vignette" Note, Choice Extremely Fine.
Haxby NJ-445 G44b. One of the most beautiful vignettes engraved by Danforth, Wright & Company, captured from a painting by Gareneray. Under magnification, it is clear one of the boatsman is a black man! Red "5" protectors flank the denominations. When this bank went broke (if it was ever solvent at all), the a vast amount of notes were altered to other solvent bank titles across the eastern seaboard from Wilmington, NC to Bath, ME. This is the first we have had since 2001 and they have gotten very hard to encounter. There is some very isolated upper edge tone and some minor edge handling. Uncirculated notes, when seen, have brought $750 or more these days.
