Description
Monumental Italian carved walnut cabinet, late 18th or early 19th century, centering a family crest flanked by a broken pediment topped by reclining allegories of Charity and Knowledge both holding palm fronds and flanked by putti musicians, surmounting a stepped cornice with dentil molding atop a continuous frieze depicting winged lions, urns, wolves, and rampant eagles, interspaced with Northwind masks, surmounting four rinceau framed glass doors opening to an upholstered interior with two shelves, the doors separated by three carved caryatids, framed by pilasters decorated with relief carved acanthus scrollwork, rising on three kneeling Atlas figures, resting on a finely executed base cabinet having four doors with relief carved panels depicting scenes from the life of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, including his triumphant entrance into Rome, interspaced with shell carved niches containing fully rendered standing figures of five of the apostles including, Saints Peter, Paul, and John, the whole rising on a stepped plinth base having carved rinceau and gadrooning, 130"h x 132"w x 37"d.
