Miniature Teotihuacan Stone Standing Figure
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A petite and finely-detailed standing figure, hand-carved from a mottled dark-green stone with light inclusions. The figure displays incised arms flush with a rectangular torso, with a delineated waist and parted legs with slight bent feet. A planar back traces upwards to slanted shoulders, and a thick neck supports a characteristically blocky head. The expressive visage boasts a slender nose, parted mouth with thin lips, twin perforated earspools, pronounced cheek structure, and thin, recessed eyes, all below a curved brow line. A wonderful example exhibiting expressive facial features, fabulous string-cut delineations, and classic Teotihuacan stylization. Comes with museum-quality stand. Size: 2.875" H (7.3 cm); 5.1" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

Teotihuacan was at one time the largest city in the Pre-Columbian world, famous for its pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon) as well as the Great Compound with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (aka Temple of the Plumed Serpent) punctuating the Avenue of the Dead. Stone figures like this example are perhaps the best known works of Teotihuacan art. Examples like this figure from Teotihuacan often have idealized features (rather than individual depictions) and calm expressions, with simple lines used economically in order to create powerful effigies without an overuse of detail.
