Description
Pre-Columbian, Guerrero, Mexico, Mezcala culture, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A kneeling monkey idol carved from a beautiful stone of sage green hues with darker inclusions. The monkey sits and holds his hands together above upraised knees; his upright tail is raised over his distinctly simian shaped head, presenting abstract features including slit eyes and mouth. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to differentiate facial features and limbs. What's more, these sculptural works are equally appealing for the inherent beauty of the stone selected by the ancients. Size: 3.375" H (8.6 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand.
