Description
Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 1150 to 550 BCE. A pair of cylindrical ceramic rollers, each one hollow in the center, with its exterior deeply carved with incised patterns - one featuring consecutive wave or zigzag motifs, the other with what appear to be corn kernels flanked by curled leaves. Rollers like these were probably made to be fitted onto sticks and then rolled across textiles or down the skin of arms and legs to create elaborate painted motifs. Two strong examples with remains of cinnabar on the surfaces. Size: larger measures 2.125" in diameter x 2.75" H (5.4 cm x 7 cm), though both are almost the same size
