Description
Asia, southeastern Russia, Sikhote-Alin Mountains, fell in 1947. A 107.6 gram fragment of an iron meteorite whose fiery plummet to earth marked the largest meteor fall witnessed in recorded history. Roughly 70 metric tons of material made it through the atmosphere. The flash and sound of the meteorite was seen as far away as Vladivostok, 270 miles distant. The meteor fragments covered an area of half a square mile, with some fragments found embedded in tree trunks nearby. This meteorite is approximately 93% iron, with a coarse octahedrite structure. Size: 1.95" W x 1.4" H (5 cm x 3.6 cm)
