Description
Central Europe, southwestern France to the Iberian Peninsula, Visigoth, Migration Period, Dark Ages, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A leaf-shaped two-part 24K gold belt buckle with a moveable prong and attachment holes as well as a strap plate section. Both sections are engraved with curvilinear motifs and adorned with red pigment. An extraordinary luxury item, created during a period of immense social unrest when it was wise to wear your treasures on your person. This piece may have been used for a baldric or as a helmet fastener. Regardless, a buckle like this was most certainly intended to be a visual sign of wealth, status, and rank. Size: 3" H (7.6 cm); 3.625" H (9.2 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 14.8 grams
