Description
Tang Dynasty Stone Guardian Figure, Early Buddhist Chinese Sculpture, the grimacing, muscular figure with traces of combing to stone; with old fitted wood stand using an old splice originally cut into the stone at the back. Legs missing above knees, part of drape missing, damage to hair-knot on top of head and nose; surfaces with light polish and brown coloration. Height of stone 11 inches (28 cm.). Height with stand 15 3/4 inches (40 cm.). NOTE: Bears two old painted acquisition marks to back base of stone, "08.107" and "56. 39.A", possibly for 1908 and 1956 from an unidentified Institution.
