Description
Central Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. 11th century CE. A pale red sandstone panel, perhaps made to be set into the wall of a temple, depicting a sensuous, fleshy, high-relief male torso draped with elaborate jewelry - a tight beaded necklace and a huge headdress studded with flowers in relief. The figure holds a shield and the giant paw of some massive animal - probably a lion - is visible atop the shield. The artwork of this period was inspired by that of the aerlier Gupta period, often referred to as India's Golden Age. Their refined artistic forms are characterized by fluid, almost whimsical carving, with gentle curves and a geometric attention to symmetry and shape. Size: 4.5" W x 6.2" H (11.4 cm x 15.7 cm); 7.1" H (18 cm) on included custom stand.
