Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A beautiful necklace composed of braided faience bead strands - hundreds of faience seed beads of wine red, jet black, and creamy beige hues ranging from dark to light tones. To the Egyptians, faience was known as "tjehnet," meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and were also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. All beads are ancient. Stringing, gold filled findings and clasp (9K) are modern. Faience beads have attained nice age patina. Excellent and wearable.
