Description
Scottish School, circa 1900
Portrait of a Gentleman, likely James Cullen of Leith, Scotland
Oil on canvas
Label to verso for Aitken Dott, the leading frame maker and gilder in Edinburgh that eventually became known as The Scottish Gallery. Frame dates to 1846-1863
Approx. 35" X 30" (framed), 29.75" x 25.25" (unframed)
To verso, a handwritten note gives a biography of the Cullen family, presumably related to the sitter of this portrait, detailing how the brothers George & James Cullen diverted one brother into the ministry and the other into business with the East India Company in order to financially support the family. Further paper labels on the work reference Alistair Pearse, Emil Pearse, and a date of 1910, presumably when this painting transferred down the family line.
