Peace Medal with Decorated Silver Vest (Beaded). Medal measures 50 mm diameter, vest measures 18.75" x 12" when laid flat. Indian Peace Medal: Obverse: :GEORGIVS II DEL. GRATIA. With image of King George. Reverse: "LET US LOOK TO THE MOST HIGH WHO BLESSED OUR FATHERS WITH PEACE". With image of two men pointing at the sun. Dated 1757. Attached to a beautiful beaded vest or collar with silver thread with bright red background. A very nice piece! Unsure of date of manufacture but the vest appears to be very old and hand made. Housed in a Riker Display Case that measures 20x14 inches. Indian peace medals refer to ovular or circular medals awarded to tribal leaders throughout colonial America and early United States history, primarily made of silver or brass and ranging in diameter from about one to six inches. [1] Medals were often perforated and worn suspended around the neck of the recipient. [1] Controversy remains surrounding the use and impact of peace medals in furthering diplomatic relationships between native Americans and the federal government. Many Indian peace medals today are archived in museums, libraries and cultural centers.
