Mackey, being self taught for more than thirty years of her career, she realized the more she learned, the more she needed to learn. Seeking the advice of some of her favorite contemporaries, made her aware of new possibilities in both technique and subject matter. Her associations with such artists as Wayne Wolfe, Jim Wilcox, Dan Gerhartz and Matt Smith, to name a few, really broadened her vision and her inspiration for painting.

The sizes of Mackey's paintings are usually determined by the subject she is inspired to paint. Most all of her paintings start with plein air, regardless of weather or season. The few photos she takes, for detail reference only, are then worked into larger pieces.
