Africa, what is now north-central Angola, Ovimbundu or Chokwe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A special scepter, perhaps once belonging to an Ovimbundu or Chokwe chief, finely carved from a hard wood, depicting an attractive, idealized visage on the upper end, with immense attention to the facial features and the surrounding intricately delineated coiffure/headdress presenting stylized linear/geometric and cross-hatched patterns - these also appearing on the back of the head. The figure's focussed, meditative expression, comprised of downcast eyes and pursed lips in concert with its slightly bulging forehead connote intelligence as well as purpose and perseverance.
