Description
(10) International News Photos, 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" glossy, of the deep sea recovery of the wreckage of the US Navy Dirigible "Akron", which crashed off New Jersey on April 4, 1933, taking 73 men aboard with her, 3 survived. Built as an aircraft carrier, she accommodated up to five F9C Sparrowhawk airplanes, was 785 feet long. The photos show the recovery of her aluminum frame, most of her 11,000 pound covering was lost.
Also included are a cachet cover "Akron Leaves Sunnyvale for Lakehurst", franked Jun 11, 1932 in San Francisco, a real photo postcard of the wreckage of the USS Shenandoah, and a litho postcard of an unidentified German rigid airship. Good condition.
