Native American, Southwest, New Mexico, Santa Clara Pueblo, Mida Tafoya (1931-), ca. 1960s to 1970s. A gorgeous, signed redware vessel, hand-built by Mida Tafoya, the granddaughter of Santa Clara pottery matriarch, Serafina (Sara Fina). Born in 1931, Mida has been a potter for more than sixty years. A wonderful example, coil-made of native clay, boasting a highly burnished finish, deeply carved with an image of the serpent deity Avanyu (Awanyu) with an arrow-like tongue, and fired to a stunning lustrous, russet red finish. Signed "Mida Tafoya" on the underside of the base. Size: 4.75" in diameter x 4" H (12.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
