Ancient Near East, Canaan, the Levant, Middle Bronze Age II, ca. 1900 to 1550 BCE. A beautiful group of two cast-bronze ceremonial axe heads. Each axe is comprised of an ovoid socketing hole, a grooved support notch, and a slender blade which gradually tapers to a vertical edge. One blade has a thinner blade with a dark-brown patina, and the other has a thicker blade edge with areas of light and dark green patina. Their design indicates they were used to shape softer materials like wood or mud bricks, rather than for use in battle, and this style is similar to those known from Tel Megiddo, an important archaeological site from the ancient Near East. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size of largest (green patina): 5.25" L (13.3 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-estate of John Piscopo, San Diego, California, USA. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.

Both axe heads have expected age-commensurate surface wear, light discoloration, and slight bending to overall form, otherwise intact and excellent. Nice dark brown patina on one axe, and nice light and dark green patina on the other.
