Description
East Asia, China, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. Four carved wooden window screens, each one featuring three panels of figural openwork and geometric fretwork - the central panels presenting an encircled calligraphic character surrounded by delicately carved decorative fretwork with four open leaves or flower blossoms set within a mesmerizing geometric program; the lower panels depicting intertwining floral branches with leafy tendrils and a zoomorphic creature; the uppermost narrow panels featuring a stylized avian form amidst more leafy tendrils. The characters denote good fortune, prosperity, and happiness. A lovely ensemble. Size: each window/screen measures 9" W x 20.75" H (22.9 cm x 52.7 cm)
