Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A charming nephrite carving of highly abstract zoomorphic form. Two round perforations have been carefully drilled through the piece, giving an impression of eyes; below that are several teeth-like ridges with low curls forming a border. It reminds me of the face of a spider or crustacean - or (forgive me) of a ghost from Pacman. Jades in Neolithic China served as grave goods, offerings to the gods, as tools in ceremonies, and as gifts between leaders for sealing treaties. Size: 3.25" W x 1.65" H (8.3 cm x 4.2 cm)
