[8], 80 pp. (8vo) 24.1x14.2 cm (9½x5¾"), early 19th century mottled calf (neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down), gilt decorations, gilt inner dentelles, morocco labels, gilt lettering, untrimmed. First edition, preceding the published trade edition of the same year.
Smollett brought the manuscript of The Regicide with him to London as an 18-year old with hopes of establishing his career in the theatre, but was the play was never performed, and its author was forced to go to sea as a ship's surgeon instead.
In his preface here, Smollett gives an account of his assorted reversals in attempting to get the tragedy produced, and he also wrote a fictionalized version of the tale in his novel Roderick Random.
Condition
Binding a bit rubbed; some dust-soiling and light foxing, with damp-staining along the lower edges; a very good, large untrimmed copy.
