Description
A gilded Byzantine/Coptic bone doll, c. 4th - 5th Century AD, depicting a stylized female wearing a headdress. Both sides of the body are pierced for the attachment of arms. Doll retains fragments of gold leaf gilding that would have represented areas of clothing. This gilt likely indicates that this doll was owned by a member of an upper class family, H: 5 7/8 in (14.9cm). Ex estate of Seward Kennedy, New York. Mr. Kennedy worked for decades as a lawyer for the Mobil Corporation, and acquired his collection throughout decades of travel beginning in the 1950\\\'s.
