三足帶蓋盛器

An optimally preserved, complete piece, even its colorful paint also in a remarkably, unusually good condition. The vessel is a ding, a cooking pot for dishes, in part, in a ritual context. Being terracotta, it was, of course, not used for cooking, and certainly not so as a part of the burial arrangement, but rather served as a symbol for prosperi-ty and status. Characteristic of the ding is its round form set atop three small, but powerful and zoomorphic legs as well as the, as always, cut-out, vertically flanging handles located on the sides. The painting, applied onto a dark-gray background, features the colors white, light blue and red soil. The patterns are quite freely and generously painted and derived from those on old bronzes. The painting is especial-ly well preserved on the vaulted lid.

A very similar, approximately same-sized piece, excavated in Luoyang (Henan) is reproduced in Treasures from the Han, on page 90.

Every piece he acquired was intensively examined for its authenticity, including with the collaboration of Chinese and German experts. Professionally, Mr. Keuper was active as a dealer of antique Chinese art, always made his acquisitions with great care and thus, in all the years, never had a complaint about the identification of an object. He had a comprehensive collection of over 300 specialized books by renowned authors about Chinese antiques (which could also be offered for sale as a whole). This private collection is now being sold due to reasons of age.
