Description
"Narragansett"-Style Salt Cellar and Spoon
ca. 1900, the bowl unmarked, the spoon Gorham Corp., Providence, Rhode Island, model #2, in the form of a realistic oyster shell, decorated with applied "barnacles" and single inverted shell foot, the spoon with shell-form bowl, ribboned "branch" handle and crab finial, the bowl acid engraved "Sea Bright NJ".
cellar, h. 1-1/2", l. 4-3/4", w. 2-1/2"; spoon, l. 5"; 3.91 total t. oz.
Literature: Chris A. McGlothlin, Gorham Spoons: Sterling Souvenirs from a Bygone Era (Louisville, KY: Rock Springs Press, 2017), pp. 342-344.
Notes: McGlothlin notes that the set here was probably an almond set, and came in two sizes. "Crab Spoon #2" was cast in pieces and hand assembled, so that no two are exactly identical. It was known with at least four bowl variations.
