Item Details
Description
Fine Pair of Louis XV Provincial Covered Silver Salt Cellars

second quarter 18th century, Avignon, probably Joseph Virgule Vilhet (Master 1740; d. 1780), each of oval trencher form with addorsed serpentine ends, waisted and decorated with a gadrooned band above and a leaf-and-dart band below, the cellar covered with a hinged coquille-form lid.
h. 1-3/4", l. 3-1/8", w. 2-1/4"; 8.90 total t. oz.

Literature: Claude Gerard Cassan, Les Orfevres d'Avignon et du Comtat Venaissin (Vincennes: Rosay, 1984), pp. 10 & 54-60.
Condition
**In generally quite good condition. Each cellar has a small pinhole on the back under the hinge, probably an original solder vent now worn a bit larger. One cellar has a tiny split and spot-solder repair on the basal edge. Visible joins. Marks excellent. A very attractive pair with negligible condition issues.
