Description
DESCRIPTION: 14" Alabama Indestructible Doll. Oil painted cloth head. Hand painted face and hair. Cloth body with blue paint-dipped legs and painted shoes. Stitched joints at shoulders and hips. Stamped to body "No. 0" and "Patented Sept. 26 1905". Marked to leg "Mrs. S.S. Smith Manufacturer of and Dealer of Alabama Indestructible Dolls." In undergarments, petticoat, dress and bonnet hand made and designed by Nancy L. White. Ella Smith invented the Alabama Indestructible doll so that children could play with dolls without the fear of breaking them. She designed them to be easily customizable so that they could look like the children that played with them. This was one of the first companies to produce African American dolls. MEASUREMENTS: 14". CONDITION: Toning to cloth body and painted face. Toning to clothing. Light fraying to cloth edges. Losses of paint to crown of head. Faded ink to back.
