The lot features an exceedingly rare authentic original beaded war lance case from the Crow Native American Indians and dating to circa 1890-1900’s. The lance scabbard features an Indian tanned Buffalo rawhide parfleche construction with early trade clothe edging and excellent traditional geometric beadwork. These Crow lance cases are extremely rare and this example exhibits exceptional art appeal. The piece is wonderfully embellished with a large beaded and fringed panel, beaded drops, old black and red trade clothe and artful scratch-incised and pigment mineral painted designs made to mimic the head of the steel war lance. The cases were historically known to house the swords used by the Indians during the Indian Wars. The case was typically slid down over the top of a war lance or spear head for storage. The piece comes with a folder including other fine examples of authentic Crow War Lance Cases and a letter of authentication from author and collector John Baldwin. The piece is also pictured in the new publication book “Rare American Indian Weapons: Tomahawks, War Clubs and Knives” (2018) by Mark Francis on page 84. The beadwork features an exquisite traditional geometric pattern in authentic correct early glass trade seed beads with a padre sky light blue background and chalk white, semi-transparent dark blue, semi-transparent dark green, semi-transparent red, semi-transparent blue, and greasy yellow.
